Appian Technology boosts sales to police forces and city wide CCTV Monitoring Systems

Appian Technology plc (' Appian'), the OFEX traded provider of traffic management products, is facing growing demand from police forces and city CCTV monitoring systems throughout the country and overseas for its innovative number plate recognition systems.

As well as supplying police authorities in this country, Spain and South Africa, Appian is selling an increasing number of Automatic Number Plate Recognition ('ALPR') systems for use on CCTV systems in cities and towns in the UK. The use of Appian neural network based recognition systems assist police forces in identifying suspect vehicles and enhances the productivity of police resources. This is a new and growing market for Appian's products.

Appian has been building an international distributor network to exploit the developing markets for traffic monitoring, congestion charging and access control. The Company's products include Talon, which reads number plates in all weather conditions and at high vehicle speeds and Navigator, which indicates when car parks are full and the location of spare spaces.

The Company continues to invest in its technology and recently introduced TalonSP, a software based version of Talon which is capable of running a number of cameras on a high specification personal computer. This takes Talon into niche areas of the market where systems are needed to monitor a small number of lanes, and smaller access control systems. The range has been enhanced to improve its ease of set up and "point and shoot" ability in addition to improved recognition of square and non rectangular number plates.

The Talon system has recently been integrated into software produced by CellStack Systems, part of Telindus, a long established manufacturer of broadband access and video surveillance solutions which has supplied installations to London Underground and highway authorities. Video data is fed from the CellStack Vision system into Talon allowing a comprehensive database of traffic movement to be created and maintained. The system will be on display at the IFSEC show at the NEC Birmingham from May 10-14.

Telindus Director Dr Ken Sutherland said: "We have a great deal of experience in video surveillance and Appian is highly experienced in Automatic License Plate Recognition. This is an ideal partnership for us and our customers."

Appian Chairman Pat Ryan said: "We have made great progress in market development and product innovation in a short period of time and are well placed to take advantage of the traffic management, security and enforcement opportunities presented globally. We are now looking closely at acquisition opportunities in related areas such as security, traffic management, access control, parking, digital imaging and information distribution."
